Susan Richter grew up in San Antonio and Bastrop, TX, before settling in Austin, where she worked in Physical Therapy. Bernd Richter moved from Germany to Austin in 1980 to continue his graduate studies in geology at UT Austin. Their paths crossed at the Austin Rowing Club, of which Susan had been a founding member.
After Town Lake had become too small to satisfy their need for outdoor adventures, they hit the road for a 6-month trip to Alaska in their VW camper van. This trip installed in them a travel bug that hasn't stopped moving yet. They went back to their professional careers in Austin for a few more years, but finally 'dropped out' to live an alternative life style that saw them spending extended times in Germany and Colorado before settling for good in Alaska. It was there, encouraged by spectacular wild life, scenery, and long winters, that they discovered their love for writing and illustrating children's books. After 15 years in Alaska, their work has grown to more than 30 children's books and games (see www.alaskachildrensbooks.com).
Alaska winters can be nice, but they are long, for sure. Thus, it was just a matter of time that Susan and Bernd would join the large number of 'Snowbirds' heading south for part of the winter. Naturally, their migration led them back to the Austin area of Texas and, also naturally, they brought with them their love for writing children's books.
